Literature Analysis Questions #2
Gabriel - The "newchild" that Jonas’s family cares for at night. He is sweet and adorable during the day, but has trouble sleeping at night unless Jonas puts him to sleep with some memories. He and Jonas become very close.
Asher - Jonas’s best friend. Asher is a fun-loving, hasty boy who usually speaks too fast, mixing up his words to the exasperation of his teachers and Jonas. He is assigned the position of Assistant Director of Recreation.
Fiona - Another of Jonas’s friends. She has red hair, which only Jonas can see, and works as a Caretaker in the House of the Old. She is mild-mannered and patient. Jonas’s first sexual stirrings come in the form of an erotic dream about Fiona.
Larissa - A woman living in the House of the Old. Jonas shares pleasant conversation with her while he gives her a bath during his volunteer hours. Like many inhabitants of the House of the Old, she enjoys gossip and looks forward to her release.
The Chief Elder - The elected leader of Jonas’s community. She to shows genuine affection for all of the children at the Ceremony of Twelve, knowing of their names and an anecdote about each one.
I think the theme of this story was:fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work.
I think that the author does a good job of describing who the characters are but I don't think that Lois Lowry did a good job of describing how the characters look like. For example, the only thing that I remember about Jonas is that his eyes are different then everybody else and people think that is very different to have lighter color eyes then everyone.
After reading this book I thought that I really meet jonas and how he went though his life. Also I think that I met all the characters because the story showed me that everyone had a role to their life no matter what it is.
Literature Analysis Question #1
The giver is written from the point of view of Jonas. He is an eleven-year-old boy living in a futuristic society that has eliminated all pain, fear, war, and hatred from anything in the lifetime. There is no prejudice, since everyone looks and acts basically the same. Everyone is very polite. The society has also eliminated choice: at age twelve every member of the community is assigned a job based on his or her abilities and interests. Citizens can apply for and be assigned compatible spouses, and each couple is assigned exactly two children each. The children are born to Birthmothers, who never see them, and spend their first year in a Nurturing Center with other babies, or “newchildren,” born that year. When their children are grown, family units dissolve and adults live together with Childless Adults until they are too old to function in the society. Then they spend their last years being cared for in the House of the Old until they are finally “released” from the society. In the community, release is death, but it is never described that way; most people think that after release, flawed newchildren and joyful elderly people are welcomed into the vast expanse of Elsewhere that surrounds the communities. Citizens who break rules or fail to adapt properly to the society’s codes of behavior are also released, though in their cases it is an occasion of great shame. Everything is planned and organized so that life is as convenient and pleasant as possible.
Jonas - The eleven-year-old protagonist of The Giver. Sensitive and intelligent, with strange powers of perception that he doesn’t understand, Jonas is chosen to be the new Receiver of Memory for his community when he turns twelve. Even before his training, Jonas is unusually thoughtful, expresses great concern for his friends and family, and thinks it would be nice to be closer to other people. After his training begins, Jonas’s universe widens dramatically. His new awareness of strong emotions, beautiful colors, and great suffering makes him extremely passionate about the world around him and the welfare of the people he loves, though on the whole he remains level-headed and thoughtful.
Jonas’s father - A mild-mannered, tenderhearted Nurturer who works with infants. He is very sweet with his two children. He enjoys his job and takes it very seriously, constantly trying to nurture children who will stay alive until the Ceremony of Names. However, even if he is attached to a child, he will release it if that seems to be the best decision. He has an affectionate, playful relationship with his two children, usually referring to them by silly nicknames, and he likes playing childish games with the children he nurtures.
Jonas’s mother - A practical, pleasant woman with an important position at the Department of Justice. Jonas’s mother takes her work seriously, hoping to help people who break rules see the error of their ways. She frequently gives Jonas advice about the worries and fears he faces as he grows up.
Lily - Jonas’s seven-year-old sister. She is a chatterbox and does not know quite when to keep her mouth shut, but she is also extremely practical and well-informed for a little girl.
tone · Lowry uses direct, simple language with very few figures of speech or ironic comments. The simplicity of the language is appropriate for Lowry’s audience, children between eleven and fifteen, but it also echoes the “precision of language” demanded by Jonas’s community. Despite the simplicity, the tone is somewhat elevated, suited to the nature of Jonas’s discoveries about the richness of life.

Remix Emerson's "Self-Reliance"
Emerson's Self-Reliance teaches us to trust ourselves. We are all unique in our own ways. Society's concern is creating everything. We want to take life a step at a time because we need to make the best of our life. People want us to be the best and do good things in life. Emerson states individuals have their own voices, "which grow faint and inaudible as we enter the world." Emerson states that individuals who work hard are allowed to do anything and succeed in life. He says, "A cultivated man becomes ashamed of his property, ashamed of what he has, out of respect for his own being.” Awards come to people that dissever it and should have everything good in life… Just believe and trust yourself. I think this essay is about when you have an opinion about something, the opinion should be your own and don’t let anyone tell you what you can and cant do.

"Self-Reliance"
Notes on “Self-Reliance”:
I thought that the essay “Self-Reliance” by Emerson was about people being individuals. I think that Self Reliance means use your own thoughts, don’t let people control you, don’t let others people change the way you are. We should trust ourselves and make ourselves stronger. But the thing is many people don’t know now to be themselves and they need to learn that…People should just follow their hearts and their thoughts.
The topics that I thought that were important:
*Sees a connection between personal and universal
*Developing yourselves
*Dangers of conformity
*Self-heart and prayer
*Minds being whole
*Self- Reliance is its aversion
*Trusting one-self
I thought that each of these topics were important because they were the ones that stood out too me when I was ready. One example I thought that related to “Developing Yourselves” was “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. He may as well concern himself with his shadow on the wall. Speak what you think now in hard words, and to-morrow speak what to-morrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict every thing you said to-day. — 'Ah, so you shall be sure to be misunderstood.' — Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.”
I thought that meant that it’s okay to be different then everyone and is okay to be misunderstood with things that happen or that you do in life… Just remember that you’re different then everyone but at the same time you are the same. This is one of the quotes that stood out to me the most.

CLASS WORK
RESIGNATION-The act or instance of resigning

EXCURSION- a usually short journey

WRETCHEDNESS- living in degradation and misery
EVITABL- avoidable
In the "from Thoreau’s Walden" that we read in class I thought Thoreau was his itinerary and had a guile for what he wants to do in life. He was kind of saying that he wants to learn and understand the things he does before doing anything else. He wants to ascetic every point that he think that’s is a good point to him. He lost his despair in everything like if he just gave everything up and just let it all go. I think that he thinks that his life can be very lurid sometimes with all the thing that he has to go though. I also think that he is thinking that he can thinks of pious for what his reactions are. He has his own endemic that he is doing. He is exemplary to what he thinks his life was before he ages. He is very expostulate and innuendo because it seems like he doesn’t care what other people think. For example “Still we live meanly, like ants; though the fable tells us that we were long ago changed into men; like pygmies we fight with cranes; it is error upon error, and clout upon clout, and our best virtue has for its occasion a superfluous and evitable wretchedness. Our life is frittered away by detail.” I think this shows that he is willing to thin about what other think about what he has to say but be happy with whatever he thinks it is.

A Dream Within A Dream
A Dream Within A Dream
I think this poem is a very good poem and I like it. It made me seem that it all happened to me and when I read the poem it made me feel like if it happened to me and I knew how it felt to lose something to. I think that the author was trying to tell us that he was in his days… which means he is going to pass away. At least that’s what I think. I noticed that he wants to show us what he is going through with his words. The I have it all.

· I think that this poem is ironic. I also think the poem means that we should live our life to the fullest.
· Charles Bukowski didn’t have a very good childhood when he was growing up. I think he was trying to tell us that we should live our life to the fullest no matter what and to have a good life.
· I went to Google and typed in Levi’s Go Forth. Then it took me to some web page and I got all the information that I needed there.

what I learned about online.
I learned that all sites or adds on the side of the internet or on Facebook can carry a virus and that is bad for the computer.. We shouldn't click on anything that is there because it can mess up out computer. Also the pop ups that are on the computer we should click them because it can carry a virus.
what I thought about mss..
I though it was a good thing that I read that because I was getting confused with what was the difference between the sign and the symbol but now I do. My definition for signs is like something that you see everyday or something that I always there to see. Also symbols to me was like something like a picture or words that represent something that we don't see everyday.
what i tought about YGB
I though it was a good story I was very intrusted with it... I also though that it was a good story because I didn't know if it was a dream or what it was.I was glad that I liked because I really haven't found a book that I i am more intrusted in but that story was a good one...I am looking forward on reading more of those stories though out the year.

YOUNG GOODMAN BROWN QUESTIONS
1. What do you think Hawthorne's purpose was for writing this story?
That he will do anything to keep is wife faith to say alive and go to heaven.
2. Hawthorne states that Brown's wife is "aptly named" Faith. After reading the story, do you agree? Does Faith's name fit her personality? Does Brown have true faith in her?
Well I agree because he thinks that anything he does is possible for his wife to be good and loving with good health. I think that this name is good for her because it fits what he thinks about her, even though that he kind of lost a little connection with her.
3. What do you think the pink ribbons signify?
There is something different in her compared to all the other people.
4. Was everything Brown witnessed real, a figment of his imagination; something conjured by evil, or a dream?
Support your answer with passages from the text.
I think that it was a dream it didn’t seem like that could happen to me even though it is a story. For example: “Faith, with the pink ribbons, gazing anxiously forth, and bursting into such joy at sight of him that she skipped along the street and almost kissed her husband before the whole village.” That’s when I figured that he just dreamed because she was okay.
5. Who do you think the old man really is? What textual clues tell you this?
I though the old man was just his consciences talking to him, also trying to help him out.
6. What does the staff represent? Do you think the staff leads Brown onward or is the primary motivator Brown's own conscience/mind?
I think that the staff represented his mind because of wanting to believe everything he was thinking and in the end not being true.
7. If Brown had not ventured into the forest, how would his life be different? If he'd stayed home, would Brown still have Faith? Would he still trust his wife and his fellow townspeople?
I think that by going in to the forest can caused a different thing between his wife and him because things could happen when they are not together. I also think that it would be better if they stayed together they would be together and happy in the end. I think that he would trust her even more if they were together because they can watch over each other and have each other to solve anything they have.
That he will do anything to keep is wife faith to say alive and go to heaven.

reflextion for arguement
Opinions
Today in class I learned that there are many people that don’t want to say want they think. People have freedom to do anything and people are able to say what they think. People should just be able to think what they want and not be told if they are right or wrong. But opinion that they have should have a reason for why they think that. People should say their opinion even if they think others wont think the same. If people want to prove something I think they should have a say in everything, they shouldn’t be scared for others to think different. Your own opinion is yours but we thought that you should think about it before u say it because people can take it wrong.
People that say their opinion shouldn’t be challenged to say what are their beliefs for it. It should be something that they believe in and they have a reason for it. I had a argument with a friend in class and I thought some thing and I had my reasons but my friend though something way different and she persuade me to change my mine for my statement. Today in class I heard someone say “don’t need to be big or strong to say your opinion you just need courage to make it true.” I thought that was some thing great so say that meant a lot for me to hear that its like if they want you to say what you think and they will not judge you for what you think. To me opinions shouldn’t matter to any one because its not what they want you to think it what the person wants to think and wants to believe in.

"Reflections on Week 1"
1) Nope I think this class will help me prepare for college. I have internet and a phone to be connected.
2) I was at cal poly upward bound and we learned by playing games and experimenting on other things. There were the students that were involved in upward bound. Well I know that it was working because we learned many things by doing the things we like to do. I helped us learn that we can have fun and learn at the same time.
3) I am most excited to learn in a different way. I am looking forward on improving my vocabulary and writing. This class will help me in the future because it will help me learn in different ways that I didn’t expect. It will also help me see what/ how it might be in college.

what i want to achieve
There is some goal that I have for this class and that is learning new ways to learn. I am also exspecting to get mare help on my English because I am still learning and I am trying my best to do so. I also want a good grade in this class. I expect to learn new things that I don't know and to see if I learn more with with this class with how we are going to learn. The thing that gets me nervous if talking in front of class because I am not good at that or talking in front people.
